Excuse Me, May I Intrude On Your Story?

If you’re anything like me, you’re a people-watcher extraordinaire, dreaming of what the everyday life looks like of others, particularly what makes them tick! Often, I think of our yearly childhood travels to Disney.  The days of no-seatbelts and the never-ending “when are we gonna be there?”  My Dad (gotta love him) would play this game with us where we would guess where the other cars on the i-95 were heading and who could make up the best story.  The possibilities were endless.  My Dad was clearly the winner…ALWAYS!

The concept of knowing how to tell a good story in business is a must but there is one secret ingredient that most people don’t get.

Pay close attention to this… It is not about you being in your own story that matters, because your story is not the reason people buy.  It is about how you fit into someone else’s story. When they understand how you and your product or service fits into their story, they buy. You get that right? So, how do you go about creating your fantasy customer story? Easy Peasy.

Pay close attention to what people are doing and saying on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter.  What makes them tick?  What are they talking about?  Look for the ones that you might imagine to be your ideal customer and fill in the blanks with your stuff in their story.  It is that simple.  And, once you find that treasure…practice, practice, practice until it becomes second nature to you. Folks, don’t look to sell people what they don’t need.  It’s not cool! Instead, create things they do need and learn to understand what is missing from their story and then give them the goods.

Become the missing link in someone else’s story. Now, that’s cool!
